"but in the end, every single thing that I doubted has shown itself to be true to me."
How very true those words are and I thank you for expressing them so eloquently. I've come to see now in my fifty-fourth year, that the merit we had perhaps gained from a past life will eventually run out. Only by cultivating a sense of compassion towards all others and at every opportunity, can we try to make up lost ground.
Having heard for years the term "mindfulness", I'm now beginning to understand its' implications; think before you speak, say, or do anything that might damage this fund of merit. But rather than being in anyway nihilistic, this will open us up to the clear light of knowing, inherent in us all.
                                                                                 ~Om swasti!

Keith, I tend to think of karma from a more scientific perspective - like action and reaction - you reap what you sow. If you plant a seed and then water it, it will sprout. If you don't plant a seed, no matter how much you water it, nothing will sprout.
karma is not so much about punishment from past lives, it is more like all our our past mental process and actions have lead us to who we are today. And nothing is destined. We can become free of much of our habitual patterns and karmic debt through mindfulness and awareness, then let it go.

Perhaps karma is a consciousness version of our genes. When we are born, we've already got this load of genes 'we' didn't pick. however the newer understanding of genetics is that the genes are switches that get turned on under certain environmental conditions - they are not our fixed destiny. If you lead a poor lifestyle, eat poorly and are highly stressed, certain genes will come active and cause disease. However if we live in a relaxed and healthy manner those same genes will not trigger.

This field I believe is called epigenetics, and it is perhaps similar to what happens with Karma. We are born into this world again with a load of good and bad karma, and depending on our actions we trigger some of that good or bad karma to come to fruition. We can also burn off the negative karma, and do good deeds with a good motivation to store more good karma. But the ultimate goal is to be free from this cycle of karma and attain liberation. wake up.

I struggle with Karma as a deliverer of punishment for previous lifetimes. Why? Well I guess it is because I see no room with Karma for forgiveness. Karma seems to say that this is it fella, and no matter that you repent, there has to be payback in another life time. We are spirit that's for sure, so it's best to learn the lessons this life has thrown at us while we are here, make serious repentance, and have God forgive us on the spot. No one is free from sin.

I think that the quote from Scott Adams is one of the most profound regarding this topic.

“There's no such thing as a small act of kindness.
Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” ~Scott Adams

Whatever object one remembers as one leaves the body at the end of life, one attains that object. Thought of whatever object prevails during one's lifetime, one remembers only that object at the end of life and achieves it.
Therefore, always remember Me and do your duty. You shall certainly attain Me if your mind and intellect are ever focused on Me.
Baghavad Gita (8.06) & (8.07)

Thanks for that beautiful poem Robin.
Thanks for that post Deryk, a great read.

Hokusai says

Hokusai says look carefully.
He says pay attention, notice.
He says keep looking, stay curious.
He says there is no end to seeing

He says look forward to getting old.
He says keep changing,
you just get more who you really are.
He says get stuck, accept it, repeat
yourself as long as it is interesting.

He says keep doing what you love.

He says keep praying.

He says every one of us is a child,
every one of us is ancient
every one of us has a body.
He says every one of us is frightened.
He says every one of us has to find
a way to live with fear.

He says everything is alive --
shells, buildings, people, fish,
mountains, trees, wood is alive.
Water is alive.

Everything has its own life.

Everything lives inside us.

He says live with the world inside you.

He says it doesn't matter ifyou draw,
or write books. It doesn't matter
ifyou saw wood, or catch fish.
It doesn't matter if you sit at home
and stare at the ants on your veranda
or the shadows of the trees
and grasses in your garden.
It matters that you care.

It matters that you feel.

It matters that you notice.

It matters that life lives through you.

Contentment is life living through you.
Joy is life living through you.
Satisfaction and strength
is life living through you.

He says don't be afraid.
Don't be afraid.

Love, feel, let life take you by the hand.

Let life live through you.
